Online colleges are a part of the boom in online education. College-level programs are using online delivery, due to the easy availability of computers and the internet. Some of these courses involve little or no student interaction, and are like correspondence courses.

Others are more interactive and innovative. They use threaded discussions, video and audio clips, internet resources, e-mail, etc. Online programs are more convenient, easier to access, and are more cost effective, both for students and colleges.

Benefits of Joining an Online College

Online colleges allow you to earn a top-class degree that is nationally recognized, entirely online. You can learn at your own pace. The degrees you can earn online range from a certification, or associate degree, all the way up to a master’s degree, or even a doctorate.

You can enjoy personalized attention and avoid driving long distances to attend scheduled classes. Online colleges allow you to attend class from anywhere in the world, and at any time of the day or night.

Whether you are a student, or an experienced professional, you can reach your educational goals, through distance learning. Some of the oldest universities are offering online degrees.

Online colleges offer you unrivaled flexibility and convenience. The online programs usually cost much less than traditional programs. You can be in close contact with faculty members, experts, and experienced professionals. You may even be able to specialize in an area of your choice.

Choosing an Online College

You need to take time to research your options, while choosing an online college. Ensure that the program is accredited by a Department of Education-recognized accrediting body; otherwise it will not have much value in the job market.

Find out about the qualifications of the teachers. Ask about whether they are trained and experienced in providing online education. You can contact the Better Business Bureau to find out if anyone has registered a complaint against the online college. You can also contact the appropriate licensing board to make sure that the degree or diploma is recognized.

Talk to former and existing students, to find out about their experiences. Find out about the financing options. Enquire about the transfer of prior learning assessments and existing college credits.

Don’t be in a hurry, while selecting an online college. It is a decision you will have to live with for years to come. You will have to invest substantial time and money. Make the right decision for a path to a better future.

A little knowledge of how online education works can help make earning your online college degree a pleasant and satisfying experience. Understanding the distance education process can you help choose a quality school and earn a degree that you will be proud of. It can also help you to sometimes shorten the time it takes to earn your degree.

Choosing an Accredited School

Choosing an accredited school is a must if you want your degree to be accepted by employers. Accreditation is an assurance that a school meets accepted quality standards. There are two types of accreditation, institutional-which applies to the entire school and programmatic or specialized–which applies to special program within a school or to specialized program in a specialized school. Accrediting agencies are not run by the federal or state government; reliable accrediting agencies are recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

Getting Started: Assessing where you are at

As you embark on your degree program you will want to assess how many college credits you already have. You may have earned college credits in military training programs and business training programs and not have realized that these can count towards college. Even if you have never taken any formal training beyond high school your life experience and/or job experience may qualify you for some college credit. For example, you may be a computer whiz or an excellent photographer and yet never have taken any formal training; you can earn credit for courses in which this knowledge would have been acquired.

Your school’s advisors can help you learn if any of your previous training counts as college credit. As you begin planning your degree program, you should talk to one the school’s advisors; some online schools require that you set an appointment to talk with an advisor over the phone before enrolling in classes.

Your school’s advisors can also tell you if your school accepts life experience for credit and the process required to earn credit for life experience. Generally, the student is required to compile a portfolio, demonstrating skills or knowledge pertaining to the credit sought and an explanation of how this knowledge was acquired. Most schools which accept life experience for credit will assign you a mentor who will guide you through the assessment process.

You can also earn college credit by taking CLEP exams and AP Exams, as well as by taking examinations for credit given exclusively by your school. If you have some knowledge of a subject and would like to learn more about it on your own, this can be a good option. Check with your school before signing up for an exam; some schools do not accept certain exams and most schools have limits on the number of credits which can be earned this way.

How Long will it Take?

The time it takes to get your degree will depend on many factors:

•What type of degree you want-associate’s, bachelor’s, master’s, doctorate, or career program.

•How many credits you already have.

•How many classes you take each semester. Remember if you have not been to school for several years, you will most likely do better if you take only one or two classes at first.

Be cautious of any school that says you can get your degree in an unreasonably short period of time. There are some unscrupulous “diploma mills” out there. To be sure you are not stung by one of them, check out the school thoroughly before you apply.

More Tips to Help Smooth Your Journey

You may be rather nervous about going back to school. You may feel that you do not have the computer skills needed to sail through an online class. Actually, online courses do not require a great deal of computer savvy. The basic skills needed are the ability to use e-mail and post in a discussion room. If you do not have these basic skills your public library may offer free basic computer classes; theses generally last only a few sessions and can give you more confidence in dealing with basic tasks. Online tutorial sites for computer skills can also be very helpful.

If you are unsure about you ability to navigate in an online classroom, there are many options to help you. All online schools have help boards which are just a mouse click away and helpful technology advisors who are just a phone call away. Your fellow students in the class will also be glad to share helpful tips.

One tip most students find helpful is to familiarize yourself with the online platform used at your school before your class starts. Many schools allow you to tour their online learning platform before the class starts as long as your application has been accepted. Some schools give you a preview of the platform before you apply to the school. When you are checking out school websites, look for previews of Blackboard or the other virtual classrooms.

Although navigating online learning platforms may seem confusing at first, you will soon get the hang of it. Simply start slow with one or two classes and have patience as you learn your way around the classroom. You will find that online learning is a rewarding experience.

Law is one of the most popular degree topics today and with very good reason. In the modern world, there are many types of law practice that are aired regularly.

Criminal law is in more demand than ever, changes to laws in the last fifty years or so have made property lawyers in serious demand, divorce lawyers also get a lot of work put their way, and then of course there is the suing culture that we all live in is to blame for many of the liability and personal injury law firms that exist.

Hector Milla Editor of the “Best Online Degrees Programs” website — http://www.BestOnlineDegreeProgramsUSA.com — pointed out;

Â

“…With so many opportunities and many jobs going at any given point in time, then it is no wonder why a good percentage of students want to advance in the world of law. However, not all of them get the opportunity…”

That should actually read that they did not get the opportunity before online education was invented. Law is an extremely popular subject and is offered by a high percentage of the online schools, colleges and universities out there at the moment. Even online colleges have a limited number of places every semester and there are usually very few to spare. Very few people drop out either, because it is so prestigious and an individual will need a law degree to make it into a firm after graduation. You should therefore make sure that you training is as much fun as possible because you will be stuck with it for a few years!

“…It is essential that you investigate all options before tying yourself to one specific online law course. The sheer range of courses online will be mind blowing and you will soon see distinct difference between the content and the structure of one course to another. No two courses are the same so it would be foolish to decide on one before vetting the rest…” added H. Milla.

Students may use library service, journals and magazines, self study facilities, study packs, videos, audio tapes, CD ROMs and student computer networks with free internet access are now available at each college learning Center. Distance learning colleges eliminate the time aspect of education as much as it can be eliminated. These e learning courses have become very popular among non-traditional students who are able to earn an associate or bachelor degree from distance learning colleges, as well as traditional students who are enrolled in a standard university.

No matter what your gender or age enrolling in a distance learning college is sure to bring more joy and good to your life. For those students who wish to pursue a degree in higher education, today’s distance learning college allows them to reach that goal and still remain committed to their lifestyle. Many students prefer the freedom that e learning courses provide, and there are numerous distance learning colleges that have sprung up to meet this demand.

It is also important that you physically visit the institute and interact with the staff to gain detailed information on their teaching methodologies, the type of study material provided and personal guidance, if any, provided by the distance learning college. Currently, its academic enrolment numbers more than 200,000 students located all over the world, making it the largest private, accredited university of the distance learning colleges. Luckily, with the growing trend towards convenience derived from the home computer, non-traditional students can have access to education through a distance learning college.

Understand that there is a major difference between online and on-site college learning. The standard distance learning colleges offer online engineering courses, but so do some of the best engineering colleges and universities in the country. You can accelerate the college learning process tremendously by working all by yourself.

It is strongly recommended that English college learning be advanced further through ESL (English as a Second Language) courses, which are now available online. An end run around a college that doesn’t offer your preferred major would be to create an independent study course in that field or to use a distance-learning college to flesh out the core classes you’re taking on campus. I started in College learning about the tax codes, and there are so many ways to save taxes legally, you would never believe it.

This means attending regular classes like what is needed in traditional college learning will be your road block to stop you from go ahead with your degree earning. A study done by the Penn State University Outreach Marketing and Communications with University Continuing Education found that nearly half of distance learning college enrolments are adult students that prefer the flexibility of online classes. Why traditional colleges are more expensive than distance learning colleges, I would not have given up the chance at this freedom for a million dollars.

By enrolling in a distance learning college Depending on what your current studies are like a distance learning university might be the best solution.

Working on an online degree at home lets you learn on your own schedule and in your own way and lets you decide how quickly you want to earn your degree. Many people are earning a bachelor’s, master’s or doctorate degree online in their field of interest whether it’s an online nursing degree, online education degree, online psychology degree, or even biology, engineering or online criminal justice degree without conforming to the traditional, time consuming campus setting.

The Dept. of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation recognize the Distance Education and Training Council as the accrediting organization for distance learning institutions and education programs that offer online degrees. In 1996, the University of Colorado at Denver expanded its metropolitan campus with the formation of CU Online, one of the first fully accredited online education programs offering online university degrees. Make sure your online degree school choice has accreditation. This means the institution has passed a certain level of standards through a recognized organization for upholding quality education.

Its been reported that employers feel that an employee receiving an online education degree compared favorably, in terms of the knowledge learned, to someone with an on campus degree. If you’re working but would really like to earn a degree, then the opportunity is there more so today than ever before. Some of the experts argue that degrees in certain fields are more accepted online than in others, while some online degree programs are less suited for online-only schools.

Finding an institution that offers successful job placement after graduating or completing an online degree program may be the deciding factor in your search. Research the schools of your choice and talk to a counselor or representative from each of the institutions. Also find out what financial aid or education loans are available. There are scholarships, grants, education loans and other financial aid available for online degree programs.

Graduates of the best online degree programs are a good source of recommendations. Make sure to ask them if there is anything they think you should be aware of or avoid. Very important: make sure that any online credits you earn are transferable. Ask the institution directly because most schools vary from course to course and with the individual school policy. Try to find online forums, blogs or chat rooms with students who are attending the school you have in mind.

Today if you want to get an online degree know that it just isn’t as hard as it used to be. Keep in mind if you do need financial aid there are plenty of education loans available if you can’t locate any grants or free online degree scholarships. And don’t forget to ask what the percentage of job placement has been for online degree program graduates if you’ll be looking to start a new a career.

One of the greatest benefits of online degree programs is that you can work at your own pace at any time of the day and on any day at home or on your laptop somewhere.

One of the greatest benefits of online degree programs is that you can work at your own pace at any time of the day and on any day at home or on your laptop somewhere. Working on your online degree at home enables you to control the expenses and learn in your own style and will allow you to decide how quickly you want to earn your degree.

At one time one survey found that 55 percent of employers preferred traditional degrees over online degrees but that has all been changing in recent years. People are becoming more aware of saving money and saving the environment by not traveling to on-campus settings and that is becoming much more accepted now with the focus on global warming.

One study found that public institutions were much more likely to offer online degrees than were private institutions. The term online degrees usually refers to college degrees (sometimes including high school diplomas and non-degree certificate programs) that can be earned primarily or entirely through the use of a computer that is connected to the Internet, rather than attending college in a traditional on-campus setting. Today, you can earn a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree or even graduate degree online from a major university without ever having been to or in one of their classrooms.

Online colleges, that are fully accredited, have earned a widely recognized form of university accreditation from one of six established regional accreditation boards. The time, distance and the financial hardships of a higher education really no longer exist with the arrival on the scene today of online technology and it’s getting better all the time. According to one report, about two-thirds of the largest educational institutions have fully online degree programs.

The types of online degrees that are readily available include: associate degree, bachelor degree, master degree and doctorate degree online. Make sure to find out if you have to go to a campus to take some of the exams or complete some of your online coursework there. Take into consideration, in case you might have difficulty getting to the campus during the evenings and on weekends, how you would handle it. If you’re seeking financing there is a lot of money available for online degrees now, which was not the case in the near distant past. You can research scholarships online but make sure to be aware of any scholarship scams.

And make sure that any online credits you earn are transferable. Ask a counselor at the institution directly because most schools vary from course to course and with the individual school policy. Research the online schools of your choice and talk to a counselor or representative from those institutions to find out what financial aid, scholarships, grants, student loans or education loans are available. Types of the many online degrees that are available today include: interior design degree, law degree, education degree, engineering degree, paralegal degree, computer science degree and history degree.

Its been reported that employers feel that an employee who received an online education degree compared favorably, in terms of the knowledge learned, to someone with a resident degree. To determine whether you’d make a good online student ask yourself if you’re someone who gets things done ahead of time, procrastinates or puts them off until the very last minute. If you are not sure what you are going to be doing after you have your degree in hand, ask the school counselors or representatives handling the accredited online degree program or bachelor degree online program what your job prospects are.

So there are many advantages today to online learning. Keep in mind there are plenty of education loans available if you can’t locate the right grants or scholarships. Whether you want to earn an associate degree online, a bachelor’s degree online or even a masters or doctorate degree online, rest assured that most online programs today are fully accredited, especially from a major institution but make sure to check this out before you commit.

If you’re considering a return to college to study for a degree, it’s important that you know exactly what you want to get out of the experience. The more preparation you can do before you plunge into your studies, the more benefit you’ll get from your decision. You’re going to invest a lot of time, hard work, and tuition fees into this process, so it’s important that you are clear about your objectives.

There are as many different types of distance learning students as there are people in the world. But research and anecdotal evidence suggests that the most successful students have seriously considered the following three questions:

Why am I returning to college?

It’s tempting to answer this first question simply: “To get a degree.” And for some people, that may be motivation enough. Many of us choose to go straight to work after high school, or there may be reasons that you dropped out of college without completing your degree. And the desire to finally return to school and earn that degree can be very strong.

But most students who choose to return to school later in life do so for a practical reason: Career advancement. Skilled manual & technical work is becoming more scarce, and in a knowledge-based economy the better-paying jobs often demand a college degree.

If that’s the reason you’re considering college, be sure that you spend the necessary time researching which subjects you should study. This is especially important if you’re studying a rapidly-changing technical field like computer programming; you don’t want to be the last student in the world to become expert in an obsolete programming language.

Do I have the self-discipline to earn an online college degree?

At first glance it’s tempting to think that studying for your degree online will be easier than attending classes on campus. After all, you don’t need to get out of your pajamas, let alone out of the house!

But the fact is that you need to be extremely self-disciplined to complete even one course … and you’ll have to take quite a few to get that degree. Without the discipline that a regular schedule imposes, it’s very easy to fall behind on your course work. And while most colleges and universities now allow for asynchronous learning, which means that you don’t have to login for an online lecture at a specific time but can instead watch it at your convenience, you do still need to watch it.

Online colleges recognize the danger of students slipping behind in their work and will schedule papers, quizzes, and exams in such a way as to monitor your progress. But the final responsibility for your success or failure is yours.

Will my friends and family give me the support I need?

You’re going to spend a great deal of time studying when you plunge into your course work and, unless you have an awful lot of spare hours on your hands right now, that means time that you’ll have to take from other activities. Particularly if you’ll be working and studying simultaneously, you’ll have a lot less opportunity to spend time with family and friends. Are you, and they, comfortable with that?

If you’re married, the support of your spouse is absolutely vital. They may have to be willing to accept a much greater share of the housework, errands, and parenting. At the same time, you’re going to have much less opportunity to relax and go out for a quiet meal; see a movie; or even watch TV together in the evening.

Are you, and they, willing to make compromises to allow you to fulfill your dream of earning a degree? Are they equally invested in the potential career opportunities and rewards of your studies, or is it possible they will feel threatened by you moving up the career ladder and broadening your horizons?

If you’re already fully committed to getting your degree, don’t let these questions be a barrier to your goals. But by taking the time to address the potential pitfalls ahead of time, your experience will be more enjoyable, more manageable, and more rewarding in the long term.

Online Graduate degree programs that are treated at par with masters’ degree programs have been gaining in on the popularity front steadily over the last few years. The prime two factors that distinguish these master’s degree programs from other programs are their convenience and quality.

These master’s degree programs scores high when it comes to people who want to pursue an educational program without really giving up on job or really losing out on years of experience.

The programs are absolutely flexible and you can continue with these for as many years as you want. The added advantage with these programs is that the flexibility does not compromise quality and the graduate schools that administer these programs can produce good quality graduates.

Let us take a look at the various characteristics and advantages that an online graduate degree can offer.

First, unlike a regular course or a program, an online graduate degree program does not have a strict deadline for completion. The online graduate degree program is characterized by the flexibility and the convenience it offers to a student to pursue the course conveniently. Thus, a student can pursue an online graduate degree program easily even after attending to other interests in life or even after doing a full time job.

Second, an online graduate degree program finds greater degree of acceptance among cross sections of the student community because of the less stringent admission criteria. Regular graduate degree programs can have stringent norms and rules for admission and that can eliminate a lot of applications. Also, the regular online graduate degree programs might not allow everyone to enroll for the courses of their choice. An online graduate degree program is less stringent and offers the facility of enrolling in the choice of courses at ease.

Third, an online graduate degree program is less expensive than a regular graduate degree program. This is another reason that an online graduate degree program has greater mass appeal. A regular MBA course, for example, may cost many times higher than an online graduate degree program on business administration.

Fourth, an online graduate degree program has an array of courses that you can enroll for. An online graduate degree program has courses on business, psychology, criminal justice, healthcare, engineering, education and many other varied subjects to choose from. These courses are well planned and the course materials are logically and intelligently structured.

However, an online graduate degree program has its share of critics too. A school of thought is of the opinion that a regular graduate degree program, as far as value to one’s career is concerned, is held at a higher esteem than an online graduate degree program. But there is no doubt that online graduate degree programs have their admirers too.
